In the 21st century, a myriad of people possess their own electronic devices. Items such as mobile phones, laptops, and tablets are a few of the many examples that come to mind whenever we think of electronic devices. People from all walks of life enjoy using these devices because they can assist us in our daily lives. Before the rise of the coronavirus, electronic devices were mainly used for entertainment and work purposes. However, after the coronavirus pandemic hit the entire globe, educational institutions started to introduce and even mandate the usage of electronic devices in education. This situation created a bunch of technologically-savvy students and opened a brand new way of studying. Although there were some who oppose the usage of electronic devices in education, I still believe that students should be allowed to bring electronic devices to school. Students should be allowed to bring electronic devices to school because they can ensure their safety, look up any information, listen to useful audio clips, and record their lectures.
Firstly, students should be allowed to bring electronic devices to school because they can ensure their safety. If they are in danger, they can immediately call their parents or any relevant authorities to come and rescue them. With the additional function of location sharing, assistance can then come to them in a more timely manner. Besides that, there are also some students whose parents are working full-time and cannot pick them up from school. In that case, students can use their devices to call for a Grab car or a taxi to fetch them. It is definitely safer than walking home alone. In addition, we can also take photos of the incident and send them to our friends and family if we are in danger. This will in turn become a source of evidence should such emergencies require legal proceedings.
Secondly, students should be allowed to bring electronic devices to school because students can go online to look for information. With the development and advancement of search engines like Google, students have a worldwide database of information at their fingertips. If students encounter problems in their studies, they can look for information online. This means that they can learn how to be independent in their studies, which in turn can prepare them for university in the future. Besides that, when faced with colourful online media such as videos and gifs, students may become more interested in studying and learn how to take the initiative to improve upon their own academic productivity.
Thirdly, another reason why students should be allowed to bring electronic devices to school is that they can listen to useful audio, especially during their spare time. There may be students who enjoy playing during recess, but there are also some students who would like to listen to educational podcasts or watch educational videos during their recess. Therefore, by allowing an extra channel, it would provide students with an opportunity to absorb more information. Other than that, music has been said to release considerable amounts of stress, so when students are allowed to bring their electronic devices such as MP3 players or Walkmans and listen to music, it would help lower their stress levels.
Lastly, students should be allowed to bring electronic devices to school because they can use it to record lectures. Different students have different ways of learning. Some students learn best by reading their textbooks, some learn best by drawing beautiful notes, while some learn best by listening to lectures repetitively. With electronic devices accessible to them in school, students can record their lectures and listen to them whenever they want to revise for their exams. Additionally, by recording lectures, students who prefer notetaking can listen to the lectures again to confirm whether their notes are accurate or not.
In summation, students should be allowed to bring electronic devices to school because they can ensure their safety, look up any information, listen to useful audio clips, and record their lectures. However, I do acknowledge that there are also negative aspects of electronic devices in school. Hence, it is essential to note that even though I believe electronic devices are useful in education, the school authorities, parents, and the government should take extra care in ensuring that these devices are for educational purposes only. Strict rules should be enforced by everyone, and the students should understand that electronic devices are not supposed to be used for matters unrelated to education.
